North Africa/Middle East Initiative of German Business (NMI)

Purpose

The North Africa/Middle East Initiative of German Business (NMI) was established in March 1996. The NMI sees itself as the guardian of the interests of German companies in a politically and economically difficult environment. Its remit covers a total of 21 countries, from the Maghreb region and the Middle East, to Pakistan. Through its participation in 10 country committees in which official government bodies are also involved, it endeavours to facilitate both access to markets in the region and bilateral cooperation. At the same time, the NMI addresses the wishes of the target countries for improved market access in the European Union and seeks to improve economic cooperation. Its work is aimed at tapping the dormant potential of this region, with its geographical proximity and friendly ties to Germany.
